The total amount of renewable energy power generation in the UK is mainly wind power, but solar energy also reaches 28%. Last year, the proportion of fossil fuels in the energy structure fell to an all-time low of 37.7%.

Last year, the level of electricity generation from renewable energy in the UK hit a new record again - 43% of the country's electricity came from renewable resources, including wind, solar and biogas, up from 37% in 2019. The UK government today released the 2020 UK energy statistical summary (Dukes) prepared by the Department of Commerce, energy and industrial strategy (beis).
Last year's total energy production and consumption data confirmed the sharp decline in fossil fuel production and the increase in the proportion of renewable energy. Due to epidemic prevention restrictions, the overall energy demand, including petroleum fuel for transportation, fell to the level of the 1950s, and the total consumption decreased by 13% year-on-year.
In terms of power generation, the report highlights the 67 day coal free power generation period from April 10 to June 16, and the second 55 day coal free power generation period from April 10 to August 12. Coal power accounts for 1.8% of the total power generation, while natural gas peak shaving power plants account for 35.7%. The growth of renewable energy has exceeded that of fossil fuels. According to dukes, since 2010, the power generation of renewable energy has increased from 6.9% to the current highest level in history.

Status of solar energy
The growth trend of solar power generation in the UK has slowed, accounting for 28% of the renewable energy portfolio in 2020. The main reason for the 4.6% increase in solar power generation over 2019 last year was the improvement of weather.
Novel coronavirus pneumonia affected the solar PV installed capacity in 2020 alone by an increase of 238 MW, according to BEIS data.
A recent beis survey aimed at understanding how to increase the power generation of rooftop solar devices found that small and medium-sized enterprises in the UK may be forced to pay higher taxes after Installing Photovoltaic. When the respondents were asked this question, the response was "obviously incredible and indignant". The UK government began to cut the long-term protective electricity price (FIT) of solar energy sharply in 2015.
Wind power is better
13% of Britain's electricity comes from offshore wind power and 11.1% from onshore turbines. Combined with the two, Britain's wind power generation reached a record 75.7 TWH in 2020, accounting for 24.1%. It is said that although the increase in power generation is small, favorable wind conditions, including the storm climate in the first quarter, helped to increase power generation, so it increased by 18% compared with the previous year. Offshore wind power generation is particularly obvious, with an increase of 29% compared with last year.
The only renewable energy source with a decline in power generation is biogas, which the government attributed to the decline in the exploitation rate of landfill sites.
The total amount of renewable energy, including wind and solar energy, fell to a low of 1 GW last year, the lowest level since 2007 and the slowest growth rate since 2002.
Zero coal power target
Prior to Dukes' latest release of these data, the British government announced on June 30 that it would advance the effective time of the ban on shutting down coal-fired power plants by one year to October 1, 2024.
